Two complete activities to try

Use everyday materials. Adjust the challenge without changing the purpose.

Count it two ways

You need: Up to ten blocks, socks, buttons, or other safe objects.

  1. Touch each object once while counting.
  2. Arrange the same objects in a line.
  3. Spread them out and check that the total stays the same.

Make it easier: Start with three to five objects in a straight line.

Try more: Split the group into two parts and describe the total as an addition sentence.

Adult role: Move counted objects aside if touching each item once is difficult.

Sort and compare

You need: Six to twelve safe objects with different sizes or colours.

  1. Choose one sorting rule.
  2. Put every object in a group.
  3. Count the groups and say which has more, fewer, or the same.

Make it easier: Use one obvious contrast, such as red and not red.

Try more: Sort the same objects by a different rule and compare the new result.

Adult role: Ask how the child chose their rule; more than one sensible grouping can work.
